India’s no stranger to plastic surgery. It has the most plastic surgeons after cosmetic heavyweights like the U.S., Brazil, China, and Japan, and traffic from India to RealSelf is up more than 30 percent since the start of this year.
Women make up 76 percent of visits from India, and they’re mostly researching these three cosmetic procedures: breast augmentations, skin lightening, and scar removal. These top topics represent nearly one-fifth of all Indian traffic.
Compared to the other nations we’ve visited, India differs the most from the United States in what beauty options people research. Breasts get a lot of attention in both countries, but Indian interest in skin lightening, scar removal, hair transplants, and male breast reduction far surpasses American interest.
India’s interest in particular cosmetic treatments also varies greatly by location. Looking at the ten most populous states plus the capital territory of Delhi, data shows that the western state Gujarat has the most interest in breast augmentations and implants (13 percent of all traffic from Gujarat goes to those topics).
The most interest in hair transplants comes from neighboring Rajasthan, followed closely by the southern state of Karnataka.
For skin lightening, interest peaked in Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. All three showed the highest levels of interest in this controversial treatment.
