Nose Jobs Without Surgery: It’s Possible and Popular

A nose job with no bandages? It’s possible and, as RealSelf data shows, it’s also increasingly popular.
Last year saw more than half-a-million visits to RealSelf from people looking at non-surgical nose job content. Of those who’ve actually had the procedure, a whopping 96% recommend it.
Those good reviews may be drumming up interest, which grew 50% year over year looking at the latter half of 2015. Out of the 200 minimally invasive cosmetic options featured on RealSelf, non-surgical nose job climbed the ranks to the 15th percentile.
What’s a Non-Surgical Nose Job?
“The procedure takes 10 or 15 minutes,” says Washington, DC, facial plastic surgeon Dr. Michael T. Somenek. There’s minimal recovery time, adds Newport Beach facial plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Sadati. “Patients love that they can immediately see the results,” says Dr. Sadati.
Those results last between nine months and two years and are reversible. If you don’t like what you see after a non-surgical nose job, your doctor can use a dissolving substance called hyaluronidase that’ll get you back to your pre-procedure nose within 48 hours, says Dr. Somenek. For many, that’s a distinct advantage compared to surgery’s permanent changes.
Not that non-surgical nose jobs don’t come with some risk. “Make sure your doctor is an experienced injector and knows the nasal anatomy,” says Dr. Somenek. This will help minimize potential compression of the nose’s delicate blood vessels. Vascular compromise leading to skin necrosis is “the dreaded risk of non-surgical rhinoplasty,” says Charlotte’s Book expert and New York facial plastic surgeon Dr. Dara Liotta.
“Studies have shown a rate of vascular compromise after filler injection of approximately 0.05%,” she says. “That equates to approximately 1 in 2,000 times that facial filler injections are performed on the nose.” What can you do to tip the odds in your favor? Research your doctor.
Who’s a Candidate for Non-Surgical Nose Job?
Doctors agree that non-surgical nose jobs work best to correct minor imperfections.
“In the right candidate, a liquid rhinoplasty can even out irregularities along the bridge of the nose, make the nose appear straighter, raise the nasal bridge, or camouflage a dorsal hump on the profile view,” says Dr. Liotta. “Although you are technically adding volume with filler, the end result is often a nose that appears smaller.”
At his office, Dr. Sadati sees patients who return to his office year after year to keep up with their injections. Others, he says, opt for long-term solutions with surgery.
“I was handed a mirror and in no less than five minutes, I was given a new nose.”
Dr. Somenek, meanwhile, recommends non-surgical nose jobs rather than rhinoplasties for only a limited number of his patients. “It’s best for people who have a tiny imperfection such as a small hump on their nose,” he says.
Those who have several areas to address should consider surgery instead, adds Dr. Somenek. This is also true for those looking to correct any nasal obstruction or chronic breathing issues. Non-surgical nose jobs won’t help with those.
Who’s Getting Non-Surgical Nose Jobs?
As for who’s doing the research, RealSelf data shows age makes a difference. In the last quarter of 2015, 74% of interest came from users aged 18 to 34.
That’s 21 percentage points higher than the typical traffic RealSelf sees from this demographic, perhaps an indication that more ways to research medical options online means more people aware that surgery isn’t the only option. The lower price tag of a non-surgical nose job ($850 compared to $7,275) may also make it more appealing to a younger demographic who’s not positive surgery is the right choice.
“For as long as I can remember, I was unhappy with my nose,” writes one 19-year-old in her RealSelf review. She went to a few surgical nose job consultations but didn’t feel ready for major surgery. “Being only 19, I wasn’t ready for a permanent change.” Then she learned about non-surgical nose jobs.
“I was handed a mirror and in no less than five minutes, I was given a new nose,” she says. “It turned out exactly how I wanted and I couldn’t be happier with it.”
