Admit it. We’ve all wondered how our doctors and dermatologists get glowy, clear skin. Or why they don’t ever seem to have eye bags or look tired despite their hectic schedules. Most of all? Just how we can get those amazing results ourselves.

We asked, they answered. Here’s what a few of the top doctors on RealSelf prefer to keep themselves looking — and feeling — great.

Injectable fillers and toxins

“I inject myself with Botox and/or Dysport because I have some excess hooding of my lids and the net upward effect of the brows keeps me looking younger,” says Dr. Peter J. Malouf, a Fort Worth, Texas, dermatologist. “I also inject my cheeks, nasolabial folds and chin with hyaluronic acid fillers to improve predictable volume loss that occurs with aging.”

Dr. Nima Shemirani, a Beverly Hills facial plastic surgeon, is also a fan of injectables.

“I use injectables such as Botox/Dysport in my glabella and forehead,” he said. “For the fillers, I place Juvéderm Voluma under my eyes and in my cheeks to soften a tired look. I also use a little Restylane Lyft in my nose to lift the tip and refine my profile.”

Laser treatments

I love the Sciton BBL [BroadBand Light] and Halo and have had three treatments over the last three years,” says Dr. Grant Stevens, a Los Angeles plastic surgeon.

Dr. Steven F. Weiner, a Panama City, Florida, facial plastic surgeon, has received Infini RF and Fractional PiQo4 to give him healthier looking skin.

Microneedling

Getting your face poked with tiny needles might sound like torture, but doctors and derms on RealSelf tell us again and again that it is one of the most tried-and-true ways to improve skin.

“[I use] microneedling for smoothing residual superficial surface textural and pigmentary irregularities, such as postinflammatory erythema, or redness, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma, and the repigmentation of hypopigmented spots and scars,” says Dr. Nelson Lee Novick, a New York dermatologic surgeon.

Dr. Shemirani says his skin care regimen begins with “routine microneedling sessions to refresh the skin and stimulate collagen formation.”

Topicals

It may seem like old-school knowledge, but good skin care with the right topicals still works wonders.

“I use topicals daily,” says Dr. Ronald Shelton, a New York dermatologic surgeon. “Sunscreen, Alastin recovery complex to rebuild my sun-damaged collagen and elastin, and Skin Better Science antioxidant lotion to help reverse prior sun damage.”

The second part of Dr. Shemirani’s skincare routine includes “either NuGene Universal Serum or Eye Serum twice a day with iS Clinical Sunscreen in the morning and NuGene Universal Cream at night.”

Facial treatments

Basic, yet so relaxing. Facials can help promote and extend the life of your cosmetic treatments. And they feel good, too.

Dr. Shemirani rounds out his skin care routine with “facials every two to three months in-between microneedling sessions,” and Dr. Stevens is also a fan, telling us that he’s had  “two Ultherapy facial treatments and looks forward to another next month.”

Of course, if you’re under treatment, check with your doctor or derm about what type of facial would complement your skin care plan between office visits.

Hair restoration

Nice hair can work wonders.

“When I was in my late 20s, I was faced with hair loss,” said Dr. Pramit Malhotra, an Ann Arbor, Michigan, plastic surgeon. “I was so concerned that I was using an old Indian recipe of mustard oil to help grow hair — imagine what that did for my social life!

“I had a hair restoration procedure at that time, and it has been the best thing that I have ever done for myself, excluding marrying my wife, of course. I now perform this procedure, and it is so gratifying to see my patients have the results that I have enjoyed now for almost 20 years.”

Dr. Jeffrey Rapaport, an Englewood, New Jersey, dermatologic surgeon, is also a fan of hair-loss treatments. “I personally received PRP treatments for my hair loss and thinning hair. I have found it effective in decreasing hair loss and shedding as well as increasing the thickness of my scalp.”
